What is a Solar Flare?
A flare is defined as a sudden, rapid, and intense variation in
brightness. A solar flare occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in
the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. Radiation is emitted across
virtually the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves at the
long wavelength end, through optical emission to x-rays and gamma rays at
the short wavelength end. The amount of energy released is the equivalent
of millions of 100-megaton hydrogen bombs exploding at the same time! The
first solar flare recorded in astronomical literature was on September 1,
1859.

SUN TSUNAMIE –
SOLAR FLARE
A solar flare is an explosion on the Sun that happens when energy stored
in twisted magnetic fields (usually above sunspots) is suddenly released.
Flares produce a burst of radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum,
from radio waves to x-rays and gamma-rays.

I took the pictures above and below in Mt. Pleasant,
PA. on December 10th, 2006. I was totally unaware of what I was
looking at, but I instinctively knew that it was not a ‘normal’ occurrence
– there was just something too strange about it. Little did I know that it
was possibly a result of the ‘Sun Tsunamie’ that took place on December
8th.

"Probably by now one of your co-inhabitants on the planet and cyberspace
forwarded the fantastic picture of the tsunami blast on the surface of the
Sun occurring on December 8th. If not, you can still locate it on such
sites as www.spaceweather.com.
The blast was truly staggering. Not only was the visual impact stunning,
the result of that blast on Earth perseveres. The radiation ejected from
the Sun during last week’s blast continues to douse the planet and all the
people on it with supercharged radiation." - Philip Sedgewick.
